In “The Taffetas,” it’s the late 1950s, and the titular vocal group is making its first television appearance on a show called “Spotlight on Music.” The group is made up of made up of four sisters from Muncie, Indiana (or so they tell us) whose last name is presumably not actually Taffeta. The whole show is just their act, with no glimpse of their offstage lives aside from their rehearsed stage patter and an equally prepackaged segment of answering prepared questions from fans. The closest thing there is to a plot is the idea that Ed Sullivan might be watching tonight and may be interested in the Taffetas coming on his show. Although this TV appearance is seemingly the Taffetas’ big break, especially if they get picked up by Sullivan, they seem to be pretty famous already, with singles and albums out, references to fan magazines, and of course all those questions from admirers.
